What Is A Water Distiller And How Are They Used?

How does water distiller work?

  1. The tap water is fed into the boiling chamber of a water distiller
  2. The boiling chamber is heated with an in-built heat element
  3. Steam is produced once the water in the boiling chamber starts to boil
  4. The steam rises up from the boiling chamber and is released through a vent into a condenser. The condenser is a stainless steel coil of tube.
  5. Hard deposits like salt and minerals are retained in the boiling chamber
  6. The steam then enters a condenser where it is cooled by a high-powered fan
  7. As the vapor begins to condense, water droplets are formed
  8. These water droplets then travel down the condenser tube and pass through an activated carbon postfilter where contaminants like VOCs are removed
  9. The distilled water is then collected in a separate container or a stainless steel reservoir
  10. And voila! Pure, untainted water is yours for the taking!

The example in Figure A, above, shows a distiller that can purify water by using one of the oldest methods of water treatment. This is done through steam distillation. When the distiller is being used by an individual, the water temperature rises to approximately 212°F or 100°C, killing all sorts of cysts, bacteria, pathogens and viruses that may be present in the water.   1. Boiling water converts to steam (2).
  2. Steam rises and leaves dissolved solids, salts, metals, microbes, and other substance behind.
  3. Any low boiling gases that are left behind are then discharged through a vent.
  4. Steam is cooled in a steel condenser, converting the steam into high quality water.
  5. The Distilled water then percolates through the final stage in a polished coconut shell carbon filter to enhance quality of adsorption of volatile organic compounds. 
  6. The water is then collected in a stainless steel reservoir.

How long does it take to distill water?

It usually takes around four to six hours for a countertop water distiller to produce one gallon of distilled water.
